The power of an image – blog post #1

15116791As an advertising professional, especially one who is a student of design, I’m familiar with the power of an image. An image can inspire you, inform you, create an action or a reaction. It has many facets and is a very powerful tool. It can also be used to mislead. Even in advertising, this is considered unethical and you can be held accountable for false promises. Even with just an image. It is why I’ve decided to start a blog series that showcases examples that I consider an irresponsible use of this power.

My first example is in a news report, which I think is an industry I may be talking about quite often. A while back I saw an article about a girl who was terribly attacked by several dogs. A very unfortunate situation. With a headline reading, “Children Savaged By Escaped Dog Pack,” the article showed a picture of a snarling pit bull. Based on the power of the image, your immediate response is that this child was attacked by a pack of pit bulls. But read on. The image caption says, “A pit bull terrier, similar to the dogs that attacked the children”. SIMILAR to the dogs. Then, if you read in the article it says, “One dog, a mastiff…” and later, “The mastiff and what appeared to be pit bull mixes…”. None of which are even close to giving hard facts about the breeds, or that these dogs were pit bulls. So, why mislead with the image? Where’s this publication’s ethics?

As I said earlier, I work in advertising. Which means I also have the same power to mislead by using images (or text for that matter). But I don’t. Not because I would be held accountable, but because it’s a question of ethics. It’s irresponsible. I think it’s unfortunate that this type of journalism exists, and I would appreciate news reporting that tells the whole truth about an incident and doesn’t sensationalize the facts. Understand the power of your images (and words) and how they affect your audience.

In closing, if you are unaware what a mastiff is, you can read about the breed here. It is a massive dog, but its natural nature is family oriented and very loyal. Over centuries people have used the dog as a guard dog because of its size, but the aggression is a taught response and not the nature of the animal. Also, you can ask ANY dog expert, the same thing can be said of pit bulls or pit bull mixes. It’s all about how the dog is raised. Irresponsible dog owners tend to own irresponsible dogs.

With the new year comes new resolutions. Eating less chocolate. Getting into shape. You know the drill.

I’ve never been one to make these resolutions. I’ve been known to make statements like “I’m eating more gravy this year”, but that’s about it. To be honest, I always strive to be a decent person, stay in shape, stay in touch with friends…ok, I may not do it perfectly. But, I try.

For some reason this year I got thinking more about these resolutions. Maybe something about it being the end of the first ten years of this century. Or the ‘zeros’ as George Carlin stated in his book, Last Words (which I found a perfect label for the “W” years). I was thinking about this so much I secretly made a resolution to myself.

I decided I want to be a more complete artist. I’m sure some of you are saying, “but you are an artist, silly”. But, I’m not what I consider a complete artist. I’m a designer. A creator. I write. I draw (or I should say, me draw to stay true to my brand). But, I don’t paint. Sure, every artist has their medium, but I always wanted to paint. With that said, I’ve decided to focus on doing 1 painting a month for the year of 2010. Consider this a virtual unveiling of my first piece of art for the year. Something I volunteered to do for the Utica Music and Arts Fest, which we originally developed the brand for at Romanelli Communications.

Note: although this is a bit of a selfish resolution, I will also continue to be a better person, stay in touch with friends, stay in shape, etc. Though I have cut down on the gravy a bit.

running vs. spectating

photo1This past weekend we went down to NYC for the 40th Annual NYC Marathon. This is the third year in a row we went. I say we, as I’m talking about myself and my girlfriend, Anita. She is the runner. I am the spectator. It’s debatable who enjoys the marathon more.

This is Anita’s 18th marathon – no, that’s not a typo. If you had to define her in one word, it would be ‘runner’. She has run some of the toughest marathons in the world (including Boston 3 times), and runs them very well. Breaking 3 hours on several occasions. I’ve had the honor of being with her for 4 of those marathons and I’ve always enjoyed being on the sidelines. Watching her progress. This is the first year I was able to share the experience through the web. Below is my tweet by tweet commentary of this world event. Here it is:

Friday, Oct. 30, 2009:

1:58 PM ‘On way to NYC for marathon. Anita running… And I’m not.’

Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009:

6:17 PM Small meal and early to bed. Happy Halloween all.

Though I didn’t go to bed at 6:17, Anita crashed around 8pm for an early wake up. It was silly for me to stay up late as I went with her to the start.

Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009 – Race Day:

Overall, very exciting stuff. Anita did very well with a finishing time of 3:16:06, 183rd out of ALL woman who ran. That’s in the top 1 percentile of all woman. After she enjoyed her bison burger and fries with 2 well deserved hard ciders and a slice of chocolate cake. I enjoyed mine with a couple IPAs, slightly less deserved. :)

hair of the dog

I have a bucket list. It’s not written down or anything. It lives in my head. One of the entries on the bucket list; to have my own radio show.

Saturday I was able to cross this off the list. In my head, of course.

A friend of mine has a show on WHCL-FM – Hamilton College’s radio station. His name is Ravin. Obviously this is his radio personality, but this is how he’s known even off the air at the station. If you are free on any given Thursday evening – and want to listen to some great live Grateful Dead or Phish, he’s your man.

Well, Ravin hooked me up with my own show and I hope to be doing it for a long time. The interesting thing is that the station is streamed online, so literally anyone can listen. For my first show I had a few friends listening in Maine (thanks Scott and Geoff), a friend in North Carolina (shout out to Joe) and had a friend try to listen in California (thanks for trying, Virginia). I also had some loyal, local listeners as well (thanks everyone). As I broadcasted, several of my friends were posting on facebook, sending me texts, etc. This was quite a rush. Connecting a lot of my friends through music – across the nation.

The name of the show is ‘Hair of the Dog’, as its on from 8-10am, Saturday mornings. My musical selection is somewhat eclectic, but tried to get it to somehow flow. I played old and new, but the music is based in strong singer/songwriters. You can hear anything from Dylan, Petty and Marley to Flaming Lips, Gomez and the Shins. I like what I listen to and I listen to what I like.

Like I said, I hope to be doing this for a very long time. Peace out.

Bloggy

Let’s take the word ‘blog’. Such an ugly little word, right? I personally believe if we changed the name to something sexier, that rolls of the tongue better, more people (and companies) would embrace it. If it sounded more like the word ‘delectable’ or ’scrumptious’, it would be embraced. With hopes to change the perception of an uncool word, the company I work for has recently made it’s blog their home page, with the title ‘our sexy blog’.

I feel like ‘blog’ came from a Viking drinking song or something. Blog, blog, blog, blog….blog, blog, blog, blog. It should be noted that my first purpose for writing this entry was to come up with a better name. But, as most may know, the word comes from ‘web log’ so it does make some sense. I also don’t think I’m going to be able to pursued millions of people to suddenly call a blog something different. But, since I am now participating in the blogisphere, I feel like we can make it a better word, a sexier word. It reminds me of the origin of the word ‘groovy’. Which started as a reference to the grooves in a record (that was before CDs, kids), so if you were worthy of being recorded, you were labelled as ‘groovy’. Then it eventually fell into common dialogue. So, with that I would like to start using the word ‘bloggy’. Sure, its silly, but so am I. And I think more people should be silly. It’s important (and yes, I realize the irony of being serious when referring to silly). Anyway…

With that said, it will most likely never catch on and ultimately, it may be a dumber word than ‘blog’. But, so is twitter and tweeting. And most importantly, tweeps. God, that’s just awful. So, go forth and use the word ‘bloggy’, its the new ‘groovy’. Or at least talk about your favorite name.

run barefoot

I don’t like to wear anything on my feet. Which is a hard thing to do when you live in the climate of central New York state. But, I try. I will wear flip flops as long as possible during late Spring, Summer and early Fall. Or wear nothing at all around the office or at home. So, when I started reading about barefoot running, it intrigued me. I read a book I borrowed from my girlfriend, who’s a phenomenal runner, called ‘Born to Run’ by Christopher McDougall. Great book about a tribe in Mexico that are natural runners. Although the run in sandals, a big part of the book was about running without running shoes. How this style can reduce joint pain and is also theorized to be the way our body is built to run. So, I started running barefoot on the track next to my house.

vibram-five-fingersQuickly learned that this new style will take a long time to get used to. The book talked about Nike coming out with a running slipper of sorts to help, but the one that really intrigued me was made by Vibram. I was first introduced to the Five Finger shoe by a coworker, and avid blogger, Ryan Miller. I thought they were interesting as they fit, literally, like a glove. Nicely hugging each individual toe. I was intrigued by them, but after reading about them, I found that a lot of barefoot runners are using them as well. Feels just like running barefoot, so they said.

So, I bought them. I’ve been running in them for a few weeks now. Just about every other day, only about 3 miles each day. They are surprisingly comfortable and do feel a lot like running barefoot. I can’t say I want to wear them around the house or anything, but they are definitely working for the workouts. I’ve gotten some pretty interesting looks while running and even had the whole local track team’s attention one day. Wether it’s the right way to run or not, they sure are fun. And that’s the important thing.

‘minor’ injury

newsweekHere’s a little something I wrote and somehow got it published online a little over a year ago. This is a much smaller version of the original writing, but they had a word limit, so I had to conform to their needs. It was a very therapeutic process and I’m glad I took the leap in writing it. I’m usually private about these sorts of things, but I feel like I can grow from the experience, so here it is. Only took me over a year to tell anyone : ) <newsweek article>

christmas music vs. early beatles

Today’s date is 9/9/09 – one thing that happened today was the release of Rock Band for the Beatles. I’m sure this will be a big hit, and yes, I secretly want it! Ok, there goes that secret. It reminds me how much I like the Beatles…

Every year, around Christmas time, I start to break out the old Beatles tunes. There’s nothing wrong with later Beatles. In fact, I think its some of the most brilliant music I’ve ever heard. But, I propose that the new Christmas music (or holiday music, whatever) becomes early Beatles music. Give it a try this year. You will never miss Deck the Halls, I promise.

quit your bitchin’

I’ve been working on the internet for a very long time. It’s part of my job. Now that the internet has reached a social level, its used as a sound board for complainers. I’ve come across a lot of bloggers, Facebookers and now Tweeters, that use the medium to bitch. We all know them. I wish to use this space differently. To stay positive and share anything that I feel helps that objective. So, if you are interested in staying positive within the online space, join me, and we’ll yell from the rooftops of the web for everyone to QUIT YOUR BITCHIN’
